Year 11 Lockdown Poetry

Year 11 Lockdown Poetry

Recently we asked students to "get creative" and use the knowledge they have gained from studying poetry to express their own reflections on the current lockdown. The 'Lockdown Poetry' they produced has been moving, thought-provoking and exceptional - we are very proud of them.

Year 11 are currently working on re-drafting and completing their poems. Below are some snippets of their work in progress.

Mrs Hartnett, English, Key Stage 4 Coordinator

Cody: MMXX

From rolling out of bed and into zoom
An aether of gaming and work
The dog moping from room to room
My sisters who make me berserk

50 minute lessons and 10 minute breaks
Even teachers are sometimes late
Breakfast bars and protein shakes
Sugary crumbs on ceramic plates

Our Wi-Fi is non-existent
And the media stay persistent
To uncover the otherworldly news
That people are breaking the system

There was racial separation
There was division across the nations
Was all a hellish place to be
But we summoned our determination

The things we did whilst locked at home
Was truly a sight to behold
Inspiration found on google chrome
Positivity outshone the cold

So, as we bash the ways of old
Stick together as a community
Soon the darkness shall implode
And we'll reach Covid immunity

Roshan:

Left craters in my soul longing for socialization,
Spending hours on My X box to compensate,
Leaving shadows stained on my sofa,
The mountain of wipes to disinfect my diseased mind

Jake:

Longingly gazing, out of his window
The boy reminisces
Back to normality.
Normality, wherefore art thou?
How soon is now?

Sunray trickles, while rain gazes
Gazes longingly, like the boy.
Oh lockdown, what a formality!
Oh how the sun,
Longs for normality.

Matt:

Feeling trapped, feeling scared, having fun, playing games
Isolating from society, feels dehumanizing, spending time, (pause) exercise
Oblivious to the pain some feel, losing too many lives, just doesn’t seem real

Tom:

Trapped, Trapped within our own homes
Locked away from the truth
The truth which murders sleep
Virtual studies on our chromes
Children stripped of their youths
Alone to weep
Alone to mourn
Awaiting the new dawn

George:

Same blue sky sometimes made us feel blue,
The hot sun sometimes burnt us,
But at home, there was always a way to cope,
Whether it be cooking or gaming, it’d be fun!

Delicious tangerines grown in Spain,
Tasted like a souvenir of our lost holiday,
Covid news in the morning,
Finished off with Wii Sports in the evening!

Church bells rang on a Sunday morning,
Now they rang silently, but still audible,
Watching nature live its life,
It was incredibly fascinating!
