KS3 Scientists and Bouncing Eggs!

Bouncing Eggs!

Key Stage 3 Science Club students kept themselves busy during the Easter break when they tried a seasonal classic of making a bouncing egg.

To make a bouncing egg, students submerged a raw, unboiled egg in vinegar and watched bubbles from the dissolving eggshell.  After a day or so the shell was chemically removed by the acid in the vinegar, leaving only the membrane holding the egg together.

Dillan 7D tells us about his results: "The eggshell dissolved, leaving a rubbery egg that was bouncy.  I dropped the egg from about 3cm and it bounced! However, when I dropped it from about 15cm, it  burst."
