Special Visit from Author, Matt Dickinson!

DSC 0903

On Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome author, Matt Dickinson, to Glyn School. Firstly, we would like to thank the Glyn PSA for funding this fantastic day - the praise and enjoyment felt by staff and students was overwhelming. Matt Dickinson was a fantastic speaker, with teachers from across the curriculum commenting on his "confidence", "passion", and "well-rounded knowledge". Having said this, none of them would be willing to undertake the thrilling adventures of climbing Mount Everest themselves!

The students were utterly gripped by Matt’s tales, videos and photos of his adventures, and there was a huge buzz around the school after each session. Here are some comments from students:

Alfie 7 Oaks: "He began his talk and I felt inspired by this dangerous trip to this beautiful place. Although there are a lot of dangers that could occur, it was so fascinating to see such an amazing place"

David 7 Oaks: "I learned about tough challenges that you had to overcome to make it, and it was all worth it when you made it to the top"

After delivering three wonderful talks - with Q&A and book signings - Matt held a small creative writing workshop whereby he equipped students with strategies to assist their creative writing, including how to make a story gripping. The students were enthused, engaged and produced such wonderful writing - it was a joy to see!

To end, I would like to paraphrase a story told by Matt: “Reading opens many paths in your life. My son, for example, during an interview for a top university - was asked, "What are you reading at the moment?". Fortunately, as an avid reader, he was able to speak confidently and passionately, and he secured his place.”

“Books ARE a form of political action. Books are knowledge. Books are reflection. Books change your mind.” - Toni Morrison

Thank you again to the Glyn PSA for funding this author visit, and to Matt Dickinson for a thrilling talk. Should you wish to, you can purchase Matt Dickinson’s books via Amazon HERE
