Exceptional 3D Clay Sculptures...

Clay 1

On Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 May, Year 10 Art students undertook their mammoth 10-hour Art PPE. Over the course of the two days, the students were challenged to make a 3D clay outcome which served as an effective and personal outcome to their current coursework project, Natural Forms. Students prepared brilliantly, engaging in a 'walking talking mock' in which students learned basic 3D sculpture techniques, and practising at home as part of their 'revision'.

On the day, the Art room was filled with bags of freshly opened clay, as well as weird and wonderful bowls, pots, pipes, and tubes that students used as molds for their basic forms. Despite a few hairy moments in which the unusually balmy early May weather caused the clay to dry out more quickly than anticipated, the students worked valiantly to conclude Day 1 with basic forms and structures. Day 2 was spent adding detail and decoration and designs, including everything from dragon fruits to pomegranates to sea life. What has been particularly noteworthy this year is the technical ambition of the designs, as well as the extent to which the students are using their art-making as a means of engaging with global issues; many designs feature our ever-depleting coral reefs, or comment on the effects of pollution on our natural world.

A special thanks must to go to all the Glyn Parents and Carers who graciously bought additional clay tool sets for their child to use during the exam, as well as to Mrs Scafidi and Mrs Lukalu whose support on the days was invaluable. A huge well done to all and, in particular, to those in receipt of special commendation certificates. Miss Gascoigne, Head of Creative and Performing Arts and Technology
