Primary Teacher Training
We offer initial teacher training (ITT) to graduates and career changer graduates joining the teaching profession through our School Direct programme. School Direct is a school-based teacher training route where trainees work alongside highly experienced classroom practitioners and spend a greater proportion of their training in school, in order to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become excellent class teachers. In addition to learning on the job, trainees follow a comprehensive training programme delivered in partnership with St Mary’s University Twickenham.
RECRUITMENT FOR 2017 OPENED ON 18 OCTOBER.
Please see our new website www.glynsurreyscitt.co.uk for more information.
School Direct is a full-time one year programme, running from September 2017 to July 2018, with an induction period in June 2017. For more information about our School Direct programme and the eligibility requirements, please see our brochure:
To be eligible for teacher training, you will need GCSEs (or equivalents) in English, Maths and Science at grade C or above, as well as an Honours degree at 2:2 or above. If you gained your degree overseas, we require you to have the Academic IELTS qualification; our minimum requirement is for an overall score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 for Reading and 6.0 for Writing.
School Direct trainees typically spend 23 weeks in school and 12 weeks at university. Successful candidates will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) awarded by St Mary’s University (Twickenham). After completing their training year, the majority of our trainees secure employment within our School Direct alliance.

All applications for initial teacher training must be made through UCAS (UCAS helpline: 0371 468 0469). The UCAS search tool is a useful way of finding relevant courses and applications for September 2017 will be open from 18 October 2016. Selection for training places takes place throughout the year so while there is no deadline for applications, we encourage you to apply as soon as you are ready.
School experience is a crucial part of your application. Please see our School Experience webpage for more information.
Before you start your teacher training, you will need to pass both the Numeracy and Literacy Professional Skills tests; you do not need to sit the tests before you send in your application. Please see the DfE website for more information on the content of the tests and where you can sit them; the website also contains online practice tests. We offer revision courses to help you prepare for your tests.
