Year 11

A number of students will take Biology - AQA 4401
Students will sit 3 Biology exams, each worth 25% of their GCSE, at the end of year 11. They will complete one piece of Biology coursework (the ISA), worth 25% of their GCSE grade, during the two year course.

 

Year 10

A number of students will take Biology - AQA 8461

Students will sit 2 Biology exams, each worth 50% of their GCSE, at the end of year 11.  They will undertake 10 required practicals throughout the two year course which will be examined during both exam papers.

Year 12 Biology - Year 1 (specification 7402):

The topics studied will be examined at the end of year 12 and again in summer 2018 as part of the final A Level examinations.  The grade achieved in year 12 will not count towards the final A Level grade but will be shown on UCAS and apprenticeship applications.


Topic 1: Biological molecules
Topic 2: Cells
Topic 3: Organisms exchange substances with their environment
Topic 4: Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

 

Year 13 Biology – Year 2 (specification 7402):

Three examination papers, each 2 hours in length, will determine the final A Level grade: paper 1 on year 12 content, paper 2 on year 13 content and a third paper explained below.  There is no formal coursework but a series of 12 practicals undertaken throughout the two year course will be examined in the written papers.


Topic 5: Energy transfer in and between organisms
Topic 6: Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environment
Topic 7: Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems                                 Topic 8: Control of gene expression

The third exam paper will examine any topic from year 12 and year 13, include critical analysis questions and a 25 mark synoptic essay.

KS3 Specification

Our Key Stage 3 course follows guidance given by Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and has been developed to ensure students have a strong grounding to exceed their potential in their GCSEs, A Levels and beyond.


In Year 7, students are initially taught in Form groups before being set by ability after October half term. Each class at Key Stage 3 is taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics by two Science teachers and periodic set changes will occur based on regular assessment. In the summer term of Year 9, students will sit end of Key Stage 3 examinations in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and after Easter will start their AQA Science GCSEs.

KS4 Specification

Year 11

Students will receive 2 GCSEs: Core Science and Additional Science.  For each GCSE qualification, students will sit 1 exam in each Science subject (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) each contributing a quarter of the final grade.  They will also complete two pieces of Science coursework (the ISA), worth 25% of the Core Science grade and 25% of the Additional Science GCSE grade.

 

AQA 4405 - Core Science

Year 10

Students will receive 2 GCSEs for this course which will be examined through 6 exam papers: 2 in Biology, 2 in Chemistry and 2 in Physics.  The syllabus is similar to that of the separate Sciences but does not go into as much detail in certain topics.  There will also be a series of required practicals for each subject which will be undertaken in class but examined in the July 2018 exam papers.
