Excellent Work in Languages

Excellent Work in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

We are continuously impressed by our linguists here at Glyn School.

At the end of the period of remote learning, teachers asked Year 7 and Year 8 students to produce a leaflet, poster or video about why they think it is important to learn a foreign language.  We were inundated with the most fantastic pieces of work, but below are snippets of work from two students:

The benefits of learning languages:

Learning any language could benefit you because you get to learn new vocab and say you go to a different country then you talk to the people there and understand what they are saying.

This is a little paragraph of what I have learnt this year so far and this has really helped me understand different cultures, as well as languages:

Me llamo Logan y tengo doce años. Vivo con mi padre, mi madre, mis dos hermanas, mi hermano y mi perro. El año pasado mi familia y yo fuimos al noreste de España de vacaciones en la playa. El viaje dura muchas horas en avión.

People who speak more than one language have improved memory, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, enhanced concentration, ability to multitask, and better listening skills.  The more you use your brain to learn new skills, the more your brain's functions work.  Learning a new language pushes your brain to get familiar with new grammar and vocabulary rules. It allows you to train your memory to remember new words, make connections between them, and use them in contextual situations. Logan 7M

Learning Languages!

In my personal opinion, Languages is one of the most enjoyable and productive lessons because every time I walk into the classroom I learn something new. I also have some things that make me learn and enjoy more than others, for example, the listening workout is challenging, but really tests your knowledge about the language and what you have learnt about it.  My favourite are the word searches, as they are easy!

I love to play memory games and one where you can get competitive with your classmates.   My personal favourite is the memory games where it is shown on the board for a certain amount of time but when it disappears you have to write it down. This is my favourite because it is hard and not the typical language workout, so it gives me a higher chance at victory.

I hope that I managed to get my message across to you about how I feel towards learning languages and that you can see it from my point of view as well. I look forward to learning more about my languages and I hope you do too! Zac 8C

On behalf of the MFL faculty, we are delighted that students are so passionate about learning a new language.
