The International School Award 2023-2026 - Accreditation Received

Scott McDonald, Chief Executive of the British Council, said: ‘The school has earned this prestigious award through its inspirational international work and links with schools abroad'

How we achieved the award

In an increasingly interconnected world, nurturing global citizenship has never been more vital. Here at Glyn School, we have been on an inspiring journey towards cultivating this mindset particularly since 2021. Our commitment to global citizenship is exemplified through a series of collaborative initiatives, cross-cultural experiences, and a dedication to understanding and appreciating the diverse perspectives that make our world truly remarkable.

Our journey began with a meaningful connection with St Christopher’s School in Nairobi, Kenya. Over the years, we have engaged in a multitude of projects aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. These initiatives include a joint climate group and a thrilling art competition that allowed students from both schools to showcase their creativity and passion for positive change.

In 2023, our Year 7 students embarked on an exciting linguistic adventure by learning Swahili, a language spoken in Nairobi and several East African countries. This not only expanded their linguistic horizons but also deepened their understanding of the rich cultural tapestry of our global community.

Year 9 students have embarked on culinary adventures, preparing and enjoying foods from around the world. This delicious journey has allowed them to appreciate the diverse flavours and traditions that each culture brings to the global table.

Our Geography curriculum for all Year groups is centred on the African continent. This deliberate choice reflects our commitment to understanding and appreciating the rich and varied landscapes, cultures, and histories that this remarkable continent embodies.

Last September, we had the pleasure of hosting Spanish students, creating an immersive and mutually beneficial experience. This cultural exchange allowed us to share our unique perspective with the world.

All subject areas have committed themselves to highlighting where we can explicitly reference global awareness and cultural diversity across our entire curriculum.

Our dedication to global citizenship has not gone unnoticed. We proudly received the Foundation Award in 2021 from the British Council and the Intermediate Award in 2022. Recently we achieved full accreditation, a testament to our unwavering commitment to nurturing global citizens.

What next for Glyn School?

As we look ahead, our journey continues. We are exploring participation in The World Scholars Cup, which will provide our students with a global stage to showcase their talents and intellect. Furthermore, we are planning to visit more Model United Nations conferences, creating a space for constructive dialogue and diplomacy.

In exciting developments, we are in talks with Kloof High School, Durban, South Africa to form another partnership. This promises to bring even more opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

In conclusion, our journey towards fostering global citizenship has been a fulfilling one. Our commitment to understanding, respecting, and appreciating the world's diversity is unwavering. We believe that by nurturing global citizens, we can inspire positive change and make our world a better place for all.

Award Information

The International School Award is a chance for schools to be recognised for their important work bringing the world into their classrooms. This is especially commendable when schools have been deeply affected by the global pandemic. The desire to build on their international work shines through and it is with upmost pride that we celebrate their achievements.

By embedding an international dimension in children’s education, these schools are preparing their students for successful lives in the UK or further afield, empowering them to be global citizens, and are creating vital opportunities in an increasingly global economy.’

The Award is now available worldwide in countries such as Greece, Nigeria and Bangladesh. Over 6000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school
  • A whole school approach to international work
  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
  • Year-round international activity
  • Involvement of the wider community
