Kieran Gall - British Record Holder!

Last weekend Kieran Gall competed in the first World Championships for Target Sprint, which was held in Suhl, Germany. The competition was part of the Junior World Championships for Rifle and Pistol shooting which takes place every two years.

Target Sprint is an international sport that combines middle distance running and air rifle shooting. Competitors start with a 400m run, then must shoot at five knock-down targets. The athletes continue to shoot until they have hit all five of the 35mm targets, then immediately start the second leg of another 400m. The shooting stage is then repeated, after which competitors run one final 400m lap. The athlete who crosses the finish line first is the winner of the event.

After a long trip out to Germany, Kieran rose to the challenge of the World stage and ran a personal best time of  5 minutes and 24 seconds. This was fast enough to qualify him for the final in 11th place in the Junior (U21) category. The final was composed of the top 12 fastest athletes from across all heats and worked in the same format as the previous round. After an incredible performance, Kieran was placed 8th in the final, this time completing the race in another personal best time of 5 minutes and 12 seconds; this is a considerable feat, given that there were Olympic gold medalists amongst the other competitors. Kieran’s performance means that he is now the British record holder for this sport.

On the second day of competition, Kieran took part in two team races. The first was the Men's team event, in which teams of three, of any age, complete back-to-back races in the fastest time possible. The team from Great Britain placed 6th in the final for this event. The second team race was the Mixed Relay - an event completed in relay fashion between one female and one male athlete. Kieran and his partner both ran a fantastic race and finished in 4th place, narrowly missing out on the bronze by just a few seconds!

Kieran has now set his sights on the next World Championships which will take place in South Korea.

Our congratulations to Kieran for his incredible achievements.
