£1,208 Raised for The Sunnybank Trust

Abbey, Bourne and Tudor Houses’ Charity Week  - £1,208 Raised for Charity

Well done and thank you! Again, the students at Glyn School showed their incredible support, kindness and generosity.

The first half term of this academic year finished on a fantastic high, with Abbey, Bourne and Tudor Houses spending the week of 16 to 20 October raising both awareness and funds for The Sunnybank Trust, a very worthy local charity that is very close to the hearts of the Glyn community.

The Sunnybank Trust is based in Epsom and supports young adults with learning disabilities to integrat into the community. Mrs Edwards, 7B Form Tutor, has a daughter, Jovi, who both volunteers and has an enriched social life focused around the fantastic benefits the charity offers. The Sunnybank Trust’s mission is to enrich the lives of young people, helping them to develop self-confidence and new skills, easing loneliness and isolation. Inclusion means  supporting people to be part of the community and feel valued, and the trust brings these young adults together, thereby introducing people with common interests who might otherwise never meet.

Throughout the Charity Weeks at Glyn, students held cake sales that included delicious home-baked creations, penalty shoot-outs, guess the sweets in the jar, sweet tombola and a great finale on the Friday. Students were invited to wear odd socks, tucking their trousers in and sending out the amazing message that ‘it's ok to be different’. Despite people’s learning difficulties, they deserve to 'take ownership of their own lives free from fear and abuse'.

We were really privileged to have Jovi and Martin, who attend the trust, and Dorothy the charity's CEO, come in and present open and honest assemblies to all eight Houses during the week. The Glyn students were engaged and supportive in all the assemblies.

Thank you to all the students, across the Houses, who helped to make this a really successful week. We raised an     unbelievable £1,208. Every penny will go directly to The Sunnybank Trust, a charity that helps to enrich the lives of members of our own local community and makes them feel like they really are part of the community despite, and  inspite of, their learning difficulties and, in so doing, enriching ours.
