Difficult to see but this is the moment yesterday afternoon that 8 Abbey and 8 Tudor took it upon themselves to take the knee for Black Lives Matter at the start of their House Football Final. We are very proud of them. https://t.co/vo1BMJEo1J

Design Technology - Construction

Head of Design and Technology

Mr M Toye

m.toye@glynschool.org

Year 9 sequence of lessons

Year 1 deals with the carpentry module of unit 2. This is the longest module in terms of time and one of the trickier elements due to the complexity of the build. It also requires longer to introduce the student to the nature of the paperwork that needs to be completed and takes them longer to produce the work. The year is sectioned up to start the students with practical practice joints before allowing them to move onto the actual project. This allows for all the common misconceptions to be identified early on and correct modelling to allow fully formed and correct technique to occur. Paperwork is divided up so that students are able to produce detailed work based on the knowledge they have learned during the build. Paperwork is strongly connected to the build so they have to be able to progress the build with knowledge before they can attempt the paperwork. TIme is built ijnto the end of the year to allow for improvements to the existing work as student skills are inevitably better at the end of the year.

Year 10 sequence of lessons

Year 2: Students will either undertake brickwork or plumbing in this year. More is achieved because the paperwork for these sections is the same format as for carpentry. Students have, therefore, a good understanding of the structure of the work here. The year is sectioned up to start the students with practical practise joints before allowing them to move onto the actual project. This allows for all the common misconceptions to be identified early on and correct modelling to allow fully formed and correct technique to occur. Paperwork is divided up so that students are able to produce detailed work based on the knowledge they have learned during the build. This year also introduces the first examination - the health and safety exam. Some of this is covered through the production of risk assessments for the practical work. A term is required to deliver ethe knowledge and practise the examination style questions. Half term 6 is used to improve any written work, after the Health and Safety examination.
