Key Stage 3 Science Club Activities

What can you see in a footprint tunnel?

During the February half term break, our Key Stage 3 scientists were set the challenge of creating and setting up a footprint tunnel to see what wildlife they have in their gardens.

Dillan 7D told us, "I made the footprint tunnel and I used cooked cold turkey and a rotten banana as enticement.  I used blue food colouring on the masking tape. On the second day, I identified cat footprints and that a third of the turkey had gone. There were also other prints, which I am guessing could have been worm, (long continuous lines) slug (thicker lines) and bird (dashes).  The banana was not even touched, which could mean that it is not a very attractive bait. After the fourth day, nothing else had happened, so I stopped recording."

It would be an interesting exercise to try this again later in the year to see if we can identify the footprints of other species and animals.
