Cakes and creativity at Glyn Coronation celebration

Our students got creative when it came to celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III – while staff provided the royal icing on the cake.

As part of our celebrations in the run up to the historic event on 6 May, Years 7 to 11 took part in a competition, where they were invited to use their imagination and creativity to commemorate the occasion in any way they chose, such as through writing a poem or a piece about the Coronation, baking a cake, painting a picture, or making a sculpture.

However, it wasn’t just the students that faced a challenge, as staff competed in the Coronation Staff Bake Off on 5 May, to determine who would be crowned star baker – and who would suffer the indignity of a royal soggy bottom.

Other events at our school included an assembly covering the Coronation, its history and how it had been celebrated in the past.

Other GLF schools celebrating the Coronation included Manor Primary School, where the children enjoyed an RAF fly past, Windmill Primary School, where they buried a time capsule, and Floreat Montague Park, where a commemorative tree was planted.

At Danetree Primary School, the children took part in a King’s Parade, while at Salfords Primary, Marden Lodge, and Warren Mead, the children dressed as royalty for the day, and at Frogmore Junior School they posed for photographs with a life-size cut-out of the King.

Children at Cordwalles Junior School each received a commemorative medal, while those at Pine Ridge and Lorraine wore red, white and blue, and at Banstead Infants they took part in the Big Help Out.
