Great Remote Learners

Great (Remote) Learners

This school year, we have been teaching our students what it means to be a Great Learner at Glyn School. So far, each half term, we have introduced students to a different learning and teaching idea. This includes what we are beginning to understand about the science of learning and how this affects what we do in our classrooms.

We have learnt about how Great Learners embrace the challenge of learning and desirable difficulty. We have also learnt how Great Learners use their teachers’ feedback to keep improving their work and becoming responsible for checking and improving their own work. We have been doing this through a combination of presentations, quizzes and discussions in Form time, and by teachers deliberately practising these with students in their lessons. We have asked students for their feedback during both half terms, which has been both very positive and insightful.

L nd T jpegThis half term teachers and students would have been practising the ‘I do, we do, you do’ model of learning, which is how teachers, as experts, gradually hand over independence for learning to students. However, now that we are all remote teaching and learning, we have decided to pause this programme, so we can think about what a Great Remote Learner is and use some of the learning ideas we have practised so far and apply those to remote classrooms.

Whilst, of course, we believe that having teachers and students together is where the magic of Great Learning happens, we will continue to support our teaching colleagues and our students, to make remote learning as ‘Great’ as we can.
