A Day in the Life of a Year 7 Student
Starting Year 7 is exciting, and every day is full of new experiences.
Here’s what a typical school day might look like for one of our Year 7 students.
8.15 am to 8.30 am - Arriving at School
Students start arriving through the gates and heading to their tutor rooms.
There are three gates which you can use - The Main Gate, Hessel Grove and Sainsbury Gate.
The Canteen is open if you fancy some breakfast and the LRC if you would like to do some work, read or use your Chromebook.
There’s a friendly buzz around the playground as everyone meets their friends, chats, and gets ready for the day.
8.40 am to 9.00 am - Registration and Form Time
Your tutor takes the register, shares important notices, and helps you get organised for the day.
Sometimes tutor time includes:
- Reading
- PSHE activities
- House competitions
- Quizes
- Goal‑setting or wellbeing check‑ins
This is your daily “home base”.
9.00 am to 10.00 am - Period 1
It’s time for your first lesson of the day.
For example: English
Students might be exploring a novel, practising descriptive writing, or working in teams to analyse a poem.
10.00 am to 11.00 am - Period 2
Next up: Science
You could be doing an experiment, using lab equipment for the first time, or learning about forces, cells or chemical reactions.
11.00 am to 11.20 am - Break Time
A chance to relax, grab a snack from the Canteen or Street Kitchen, chat with friends, or visit the library.
Year 7 students have designated areas with just Year 8 so it’s easy to stick together when you’re new.
11.20 am to 12.20 pm - Period 3
Example: Maths
You might work with your partner on problem‑solving, use mini‑whiteboards, or learn new methods step by step.
12.20 pm to 1.20 pm - Period 4
Example: Geography
Explore maps, the world around you, and topics like natural disasters or global warming.
1.20 pm to 2.20 pm - Lunchtime
At lunchtime there are lots of options.
- Pack Lunches
- Hot meals in the Main Canteen
- Sandwiches, Pizza and Pannis - In the Main Canteen or Street Kitchen (For Year 7 and 8 students only)
- We offer some Vegetarian and Vegan choices

- Lunchtime clubs - Minecraft, Debating, Geography & Ecology (GEECs), Cooking, Chemistry and more.
Year 7 and 8 have their own areas and you get to choose where you want to eat and who they sit with — it’s a great time to make friends.
2.00 pm to 3.00 pm - Period 5
Your final lesson of the day — for example, Art.
You might be sketching, painting, learning new techniques or exploring different materials.
3.00 pm - End of the School Day
Some students head home, while others stay for clubs such as:
- Sporting clubs and teams - Football, Rugby, Basketball and more
- A variety of clubs including Darts, Robotics, Design Technology, School Production and more
- Homework or reading club in the LRC
There’s always something to get involved in. Most clubs are free and we don't tend to have waiting lists
