Darts Match, Glyn 6 Beacon 5 We held the first darts match between the two schools this Wednesday and it was a great success and produced a very close result. Teams were made up of 6 players per team and the match consisted of 6 singles games, 3 pairs games and two triples. The singles matches ended 3-3 the triples 1-1 and the pairs 2-1 to Glyn. The standard of darts from both teams was very good with students scoring in excess of 100 with 3 darts on numerous occasions. A massive thanks goes out to Mr Bridgman for setting up the boards and chalking games. The same can be said of Mr Poppleton who also chalked games and called scores akin to what can be heard on televised dart matches which gave the event an almost professional feel. Thanks for Mr Mills form The Beacon for bringing his team. Thanks also to my wife for preparing a bite to eat for both teams. Feedback form both sets of students is they would like to play darts for the school on a regular basis and myself and Mr Bridgman have plans to expand this sport in the near future. Before Half term, I wrote a brief article about our ex student Ezekiel B who attended Glyn School from 2018 – 2023, before leaving to take up an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are still very new and he had to work incredibly hard to get that opportunity, through great determination he was nominated for the award ‘Apprentice of the Year’. From many many candidates after being nominated he was announced the winner, we are incredibly proud of Ezekiel and what he has achieved and wanted to share with current parents this wonderful story, please click on the link below to read more. https://darlington.ac.uk/darlington-college-apprentice-honoured-with-national-journalism-award-after-powerful-early-reporting-journey/ Mr Beaney, Head of Year 9 #apprenticeship #apprenticeoftheyear #welldone @glfschools @glfschoolsfoundation

TV News Shines a Spotlight on Glyn’s Mobile Phone Initiative On Wednesday, Glyn School was delighted to welcome a crew from ITV News as they explored the impact of the school’s mobile phone initiative, ‘Blackout’, on students’ learning, wellbeing, and social interactions. The visit, which coincided with the release of the latest OFCOM Codes of Practice Report on Thursday (https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/protecting-children/new-rules-for-a-safer-generation-of-children-online), offered a timely opportunity to showcase how Glyn students are responding thoughtfully and positively to the challenges of a hyper-connected world. Cameras captured students in 8 Merton fully engaged in their lessons, working with impressive focus and determination. The news team also interviewed Logan K (7B), Emmett M (7SB), and Michael B (7T), who represented the school with exceptional maturity and poise. They spoke eloquently about how limiting mobile phone use during the school day has helped them feel more present in lessons and more connected with their peers face-to-face. Their thoughtful reflections highlighted the wider aims of the ‘Blackout’ initiative—to reduce digital distractions, improve attention and academic performance, and encourage healthier social habits both in and out of the classroom. The full ITV News segment can be viewed here: https://www.itv.com/watch/news/ofcom-announces-game-changing-new-rules-to-keep-children-safe-online/ggfzr58 We are incredibly proud of our students for embracing this initiative and representing the school community so confidently on a national platform. Glyn School will be supporting the Epsom and Ewell Foodbank and the Surrey Epsom Pantry as part of our Community Fundraising in the runup to Easter. The Foodbank and Pantry relies on the local community for food and household donations and we hope we can support them during the Easter Break. The Foodbank and the Pantry aims to ensure that nobody in our local community has to go hungry, but they need help to make this happen. Our donations would help make a real difference. As a school, this year we are focusing on collecting items which can be used to make Food Parcels for families. The items we have been asked to collect Easter Eggs and anything from the list below: • Tinned Fish • Cooking Sauces • Tinned Spaghetti • Instant Mash • Instant Coffee • Tea Bags • Long Life Milk • Ketchup/Mayonnaise • Custard • Powdered Milk • Tinned Vegetables • Tinned Fruit • Long Life Sponge Puddings • Sugar (500gr) • Savoury Biscuits • Biscuits • Crisps • Chocolate Biscuit Bars • Chocolate Spread/Peanut Butter/Honey • Deodorant (Male/Female) • Shower Gel • Shampoo & Conditioner • Adult Toothpaste • Washing Up Liquid Form Tutors and Heads of Year will encourage all our students to support this worthwhile cause. We hope that you will support us with this initiative and ask that students give their donations to Form Tutors or hand them in at Student Reception. The deadline for donations has been extended until Wednesday 2 April 2025. #fooddonations @epsomewellfoodbank @epsompantry @good_company_surrey #donate #supportneeded #surreyschools @glfschools
