Attendance at Glyn School - including How to report an absence

Attendance at Glyn School

At Glyn School, we know that regular attendance helps students learn new skills, feel confident, and stay connected with friends. Our attendance target is 97%, as national research consistently shows that strong attendance supports both academic progress and wellbeing.

Of course, we understand that there will be times when your child cannot attend — such as illness or an unavoidable medical appointment. When this happens, please let us know as soon as possible.

Medical Evidence

If your child is absent for a longer period, we may ask for medical evidence (this does not need to be a paid-for note - an appointment card, letter, or screenshot is fine).

Medical and Dental Appointments

To reduce disruption to learning:

  • Please try to arrange appointments outside the school day whenever possible.
  • We understand this isn’t always possible, especially for hospital or orthodontic appointments.
  • Students should not miss a whole day unless absolutely necessary.
  • We may ask for medical evidence if a full day off is required.

To notify us about an appointment:

Years 7–11

Years 12–13

Students must sign in and out at Student Reception when arriving late or leaving early.

If Your Child Becomes Unwell During the School Day

If your child feels unwell, they should ask to go to Student Reception. Our staff will assess them and contact you if they need to go home.

To keep everyone safe:

  • Students must not contact parents or carers directly to arrange collection.
  • Only the school can authorise an early departure.

Authorising Absence

Only the school can authorise an absence. We make decisions based on the information you provide and may request supporting documents for medical reasons or appointments.

If we do not receive information, or if the reason does not meet the criteria for authorised absence, it may be recorded as unauthorised.
