Is Your Child Struggling With Attendance?

Many children experience difficulties attending school for a wide range of reasons. You’re not alone, and we are here to help.

Common Reasons for Attendance Difficulties

  • Worries about schoolwork or pressure
  • Friendship issues or social concerns
  • Anxiety, low mood, or overwhelm
  • Sleep difficulties or poor routines
  • Health needs (physical or emotional)
  • Changes at home (e.g., bereavement, separation)
  • Neurodiversity-related challenges (e.g., sensory overload, transitions)

Strategies to Support Attendance

1. Talk and Listen

  • Ask open questions such as “What part of the day feels hardest?”
  • Reassure your child that you will work through challenges together.

2. Build Predictable Routines

  • Regular bedtimes and wake-up times
  • Prepare bags, uniforms, and lunches the night before
  • Limit screen time before bed

3. Break the Day into Manageable Steps

  • Use visual timetables - these can be very beneficial for some children
  • Agree small, achievable goals
  • Celebrate each success, no matter how small

4. Work With School Early

  • Speak to us before things escalate
  • We are here to support both you and your child.
