Requesting a Leave of Absence
We understand that there may be rare occasions when families need to request time away from school. However, we strongly encourage all leave of absence requests to be kept to an absolute minimum — or avoided altogether — because:
-
Learning time is precious
Even a few missed days can disrupt progress, confidence, and continuity in learning. -
Every lesson builds new skills
Missing parts of a sequence makes it harder for children to keep up. -
Attendance supports friendship, wellbeing, and belonging
Time away can impact social relationships and routines. -
Regular attendance is one of the biggest predictors of success
Children who are in school consistently have the best chance to achieve their full potential.
For these reasons, schools can only authorise leave of absence in exceptional circumstances as set out in government guidance.
How to Request a Leave of Absence
For any absence that is not related to illness or medical appointments, parents and carers must complete the Leave of Absence in Exceptional Circumstances Form in advance of the proposed absence.
